Traveling with Hearing Loss: Advocate for Your Needs and Enjoy the Journey

Traveling with hearing loss can still be a great experience—if you plan ahead and ask for what you need. You deserve to enjoy your trip just like everyone else! With a little preparation, your travel can be smooth and fun.

A Smart Start: Do Your Research Before You Go

I recently visited a large national historic site for the first time, a great distance from my home. It had both indoor and outdoor areas, and I was excited to go on a tour. Before the trip, I checked the site’s website—and I’m so glad I did!

I found out that the tours used audio headsets. In this setting, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to hear clearly, so I looked for more information. During my online search, I found the email address for the disability coordinator and sent a message. I asked if there were options for people like me who are traveling with hearing loss.

Good News: Options Were Available!

The site had three great choices:

  • Headsets that work with telecoil
  • Amplified headsets
  • A written version of the tour

Since I sometimes get tired from listening to new voices, I asked for the written version. The coordinator replied quickly and told me where to pick it up. It was easy—and I was so glad I asked!

Tips for Traveling with Hearing Loss

Here are a few tips that helped me and can help you too:

  • Check the website of the place you’re visiting. Look for what to expect and how to ask for help.
  • Plan ahead. Contact the site early so they have time to support your needs.
  • Know your hearing aids. Do you use a telecoil, Bluetooth, or have special settings? This helps you choose the right tools.
  • Know your rights. In the U.S., the ADA protects your right to access. You can ask for help—and they should provide it.

Speak Up and Enjoy the Experience

Traveling with hearing loss doesn’t have to be hard. Advocate for yourself, plan ahead, and you’ll enjoy your travels even more. Speak up, ask questions, and have fun!
